The classic New Orleans Meters have made a few personnel changes since the band’s earliest incarnation in the mid ’60s. But even with the addition of “Funky” to the group’s name, its in-the-pocket groove is just as powerful, danceable, and joyous as when “Cissy Strut” blasted out of AM radios more than four decades ago. Original bassist George Porter is a force of nature, leading greasy jams that have influenced dozens of contemporary acts. They haven’t put out fresh material in a while, but who needs new music with a catalog as fat as theirs? You won’t get any closer to New Orleans on Sat., Aug. 2, when the taut, rubbery grooves from the original masters start boiling.
