On Thursday, March 22nd 2018 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gallery 72 will host a discussion between Artist Bruce Johnson and Artist, Educator, and Speaker Dr. Lisa Whittington dealing with issues surrounding the artistic representation of social justice and social justice history. Bruce Johnson’s exhibition Exercise in Restraint is currently on view at Gallery 72 and was inspired by his obsession with painting arrest photos of civil rights advocates from the mid-50’s in Montgomery, Alabama, most of them from the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dr. Lisa Whittington has also painted works inspired by the trials, tribulations and triumphs of civil rights movements past and present, and has responded eloquently in past articles and interviews to the concerns of appropriation regarding civil rights historical narratives and images.
