As we move into the last quarter of 2019, and the talkers start talking about candidates for the imaginary title of musical artist of the decade, they will undoubtedly overlook Hiss Golden Messenger, but they shouldn’t. Under the direction of songwriter and mustachioed mystic M.C. Taylor, the North Carolina-based band has been steadily building one of the most impressive catalogs of the 2010s, first on small indie labels and more recently with the great Merge Records. Their new album Terms of Surrender, out September 20, is a typically thoughtful examination of life, love, worry, and hope set against a comforting patchwork of folk, country, rock, blues, and deeply rooted Southern soul. — Ben Salmon
