In his new book, Deacon King Kong, National Book Award-winning author James McBride (The Good Lord Bird) tells the story of a cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat after he shoots the neighborhood drug dealer. McBride brings life to the characters in the community affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local police, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church, and Sportcoat himself. As the story continues, the lives of these characters overlap, and McBride proves that not all secrets are meant to be hidden.
