Magnificat: Bach, Byrd, Rachmaninoff, Stanford, Howells, and Part
March 10-11, 2023 at 8 pm
The Magnificat is an ancient liturgical text that is both a hymn of praise and a prayer for justice. It has fascinated composers for centuries, and there are hundreds of great choral settings of the text. One of the most famous is written by none other than J. S. Bach, and it calls for the full orchestra of his day: strings, flutes, oboes, bassoons, trumpets, and timpani, along with choir and soloists. It's pretty much the whole baroque "kitchen sink."
For this concert, we will present not only Bach's Magnificat, but also a varied selection of other Magnificat settings from the Renaissance to the present day.
