CRITIC'S PICK: Jazz Is Dead, Variety Playhouse—Only ex-Weather Report bassist Alphonso Johnson remains from the original 1998 incarnation of this all-instrumental, jazz fusion outfit that exclusively covers Grateful Dead music. But the rest of the band, including noted guitarist Steve Kimock, is outrageously talented as they bring a fresh and distinctive slant to the Dead’s bulging catalog. This show pays tribute to 1974s archetypal From the Mars Hotel, now celebrating its 50th anniversary. It’s a great album with a handful of Dead classics, providing plenty of material for this quartet to interpret and improvise in their unique style. — Hal Horowitz
From the venue:
Jazz Is Dead – The legacy all-star instrumental ensemble, famous for interpretations of classic Grateful Dead songs with jazz influences, (re)assembled a killer line-up to immense critical and fan acclaim, and box office success in January. To celebrate Mars Hotel 50th Anniversary, original bassist Alphonso Johnson joined by Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli & Bobby Lee Rodgers, performing songs from Grateful Dead’s ‘Wake of the Flood’, in addition to other beloved selections. Reuniting Steve Kimock & Alphonso Johnson, whom together in heavyweight post-Garcia Grateful Dead off-shoot The Other Ones, along with Bob Weir, commanded the instrumental prowess of that band that shines in Jazz Is Dead.Jazz Is Dead | 08/11/2024 8:00 PM
