CRITIC’S PICK: Robbie Krieger, City Winery—Considering how talented and groundbreaking Krieger’s work with The Doors was, he never could establish himself as a solo artist, although he had some moderately successful albums under his own name. Somewhat surprisingly, he has a new one where he shares the spotlight with a band called The Soul Savages. The guitarist, now pushing 80, still has that sound, although the all instrumental, jazz-fusion, falls a little on the easy listening tame side, ie: they’re not doing “The End.” Regardless, it’s impressive that he’s remains active (unlike Doors drummer John Densmore). And you know he’ll throw in some Morrison-era oldies, especially since he wrote “Light My Fire” which, like many Doors songs was credited to the group. —Hal Horowitz

From the venue:

Born in Los Angeles, Robby Krieger, inspired by a Chuck Berry concert, traded his classical guitar for a Gibson SG, his signature instrument. Studying physics and Indian music at UCLA, he crossed paths with drummer John Densmore and explored blues. Krieger’s interest in Indian culture led him to meet Ray Manzarek at a meditation class, and together they formed The Doors with Jim Morrison. Their debut album in 1967, featuring Krieger’s hit “Light My Fire,” catapulted them to fame. After Morrison’s death, The Doors disbanded, but Krieger continued with solo projects and collaborations. In the 21st century, he revived The Doors with Ian Astbury and Stewart Copeland for live performances and recordings. Krieger’s latest album, “Singularity,” showcases his diverse influences and guitar skills, backed by a stellar band including former members of the Frank Zappa Band.
