Hail Gail, Hannabolecter, Meghan Dowlen, Josey at 529 Bar

CRITIC’S PICK: Four bands that will rock your 2024 brain function in the best way possible share a bill at 529. Formed at a college dorm party in the not too distant past, Hail Gail is a fireball trio (Anna Marie Elbert, Grace Elizabeth Delikat, Raina Lily Ferguson) who combine elements of garage, grunge, punk and hard rock with a feminist lyrical punch to deliver a juggernaut sound that’s positively danceable and provocative.Hannahbolector celebrates the Aug. 16 release of ‘Reverse Gorgon.’ The album features singer-songwriter-guitarist Hannah Neal (Lowtown), Isaac Bishop (Vessel, Flea Circus), Andrew Hendrix (Come Senior), John Pierce (Lowtown), Lily Zwaan (Scare Quotes), Brian Halloran (W8ing4UFOS) and Katie Butler (W8ing4UFOS). “I wanted to make an album that would potentially capture pain and deal with the monsters that haunt me and I feel akin to,” said Neal, who cites PJ Harvey and Tom Waits as major inspirations.Atlanta-based indie singer-songwriter Meghan Dowlen has participated in experimental projects, such as Jade Poppyfield, Canopy Joc and Avant-Guardian Angel, along with slicker, but no less creative, settings including Material Girls. Bearing influences from alt-folk, jazz and dark lounge, Dowlen’s music conjures an intriguing, idiosyncratic ambience.Former front person for FLED (Fall in Love Every Day), Athens-based singer-songwriter Josey Wallace makes lots of music, which that falls into the dream pop, indie-pop, goofy experimental category.
