CRITIC’S PICK: Over the decades, Atlanta has been blessed by numerous visits from the incomparable, internationally acclaimed, master Japanese percussionist, composer, and sound artist Tatsuya Nakatani. Best known for using bowed gongs, which he plays solo and by teaching people recruited from the local community to perform in an ensemble, Nakatani once told me in an interview, “What I do is not traditional Japanese. Many people think of the stereotype of the Asian man with gong playing things he heard at home growing up. I am nothing like that. I’m a contemporary artist working in a contemporary art form.”Special note: The acoustics at eyedrum are exceptional, so don’t pass up an opportunity to experience Nakatani’s uniquely vibrational art form in an ideal setting. Special guest improvisers Ipek Eginli and Naan Violence will also be performing. – Doug DeLoach
