Ahead of the forthcoming and highly-anticipated exhibition at the High Museum of Art, we are thrilled to welcome artist Kelli Connell to Lucian to discuss her groundbreaking new body of work and publication, Pictures for Charis (Aperture, 2024).
This unique project examines the complex connections between artist, muse, and the natural world. Specifically, Connell is focused on writer Charis Wilson, the partner, model, and collaborator of legendary photographer Edward Weston during one of the most productive segments of his historic career. As a way to further understand this relationship, Connell embarked on an illuminating journey traveling with her own partner, Betsy Odom, to locales where Wilson and Weston made now-iconic photographs together nearly eighty years before.
During these travels, Connell collaboratively made her own photographs of Odom, upending conventional notions of photographer and muse. Seen through a contemporary queer and feminist perspective, this compelling example of visual storytelling asks new questions of a widely-known set of photographs.
