From the venue:
A new sports documentary, ‘Unseen Olympiad’, the first feature-length film created and produced by Shawscope, the New Orleans-based motion picture production company and incubator founded by Atlanta-native, Casey Shaw, in 2019 will be privately screened in Atlanta on September 18.
Most of Casey’s career has been spent working on studio feature films, including One Night in Miami, Project Power, Lovebirds and Unhinged, as well as TV shows, music videos and commercials. The impetus to create a sports film stemmed from the unique opportunity Casey has had to attend 12 Olympic Games (starting with Atlanta ‘96), five World University Games and other major sporting events in 14 countries on 5 continents.
‘Unseen Olympiad’ was filmed during the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, NY, USA and the 2023 FISU Summer World University Games in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Using the smallest village (Lake Placid) and the largest city (Chengdu) to ever host the Games since their inception in 1959 as the backdrop, the film illuminates the sport and cultural contrasts between the two Games, while showing how similar athletes’ emotions — fear, passion, patience and joy – are, regardless of the context.
Shot on 16mm film — Shawscope’s preferred medium — the work has a more realistic texture and feel than can be achieved using digital technology and is likely the first time many of the World University Games athletes, aged 18-25, have ever been shot on celluloid. The film is in six languages, was shot using a single camera, and has an original score.
‘Unseen Olympiad’ was privately screened in Lausanne, Switzerland (August 7) and New Orleans (September 1). Following the Atlanta private screening on September 18, the film will be screened in Los Angeles in mid-October.
