Students from local progressive micro-school, the Morgan Oliver School, are
organizing a Citywide School Walkout set for September 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the
Georgia Capitol Building. This event is strategically timed to coincide with an open session of the Georgia Assembly, where lawmakers will debate critical firearm safety measures.
Fueled by frustration with ongoing legislative inaction and the persistent fear of gun violence in their schools, these students have taken a stand, bypassing traditional channels and stepping into leadership roles to demand immediate action. This action, sparked by our students’ frustration with legislative inaction, has inspired several other schools to join the effort, setting off a chain reaction aimed at enlisting schools from across the entire city to join the fight.
“The students of the Morgan Oliver School have reached a breaking point,” said
Sanidia Oliver-Stone, founder and Head of School. “Part of their civic engagement
lessons is about organizing protests, and this is where they decided to put all their energy. It’s just so obvious to them that putting kids before guns is the right thing to do. They often hear grownups using the word, ‘Unacceptable,’ and now they believe that the way the grownups are acting is unacceptable.”
The walkout aims to draw widespread attention to the issue of gun violence and the
urgent need for legislative reform. The event will be a significant demonstration of youth-led activism, calling on the community to stand in solidarity and support the students’ call for change.
