CRITIC’S PICK: There’s something deliciously timely and proudly defiant about the Emory University Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library Drag Show. At a time when sanctimonious miscreants are banning books from school curriculum and getting their undies twisted over drag queens reading books to children, an esteemed educational institution hoists its freak flag high in the name of diversity, equity, inclusion and freedom of expression.
Like its predecessors, the fourth annual edition of the Rose Library Drag Show will feature performers drawn from Atlanta’s rich pool of talented artists plus out of town guests. Past shows have showcased performers such as Lorelei, Reba Douglas (from New Orleans), Lori Divine, Kellie Divine, Tatianna DeJour, Eileen Slightly and Diego Wolf. The event also functions as a celebration of the Rose Library’s special collections section devoted to documenting LGBTQ life in Atlanta and across the South.

The collection comprises papers, writings, art work and media produced by activists, playwrights, performers and organizations including The American Music Show, an Atlanta public access television show, which served as a launching pad for RuPaul’s journey to stardom. – Doug DeLoach
