The annual Emory Jazz Fest brings world-class jazz to the community with artistdemonstrations, a jazz clinic, and concerts featuring saxophonist David Sánchez, pianistGary Motley, bassist Kaleb Thompkins, drummer Leon Anderson, and the Emory BigBand. The seven-time Grammy Award nominee hasperformed with a roster of greats including Charlie Haden, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Haynes, TomHarrell and countless others.His latest album is the 2019 release Carib, exploring the folkloric music of Haiti that wasnominated for a 2020 GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz Album. Sánchez is also a member of theSFJazz Collective, an all-star octet that has been one of the most prolific ensembles of thelast decade, recognized for its stellar musicians, groundbreaking compositions and innovativetakes on the music of some of the world’s most influential artists. Sánchez has an impressiverésumé as an educator, conducting master classes, workshops and residencies at the world’stop universities and conservatories. He is “Maestro Sánchez” to students at theConservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. In 2017 he helped form the Roots, Jazz, andAmerican Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he remains onthe faculty.Gary Motley has been at the forefront of jazz in the southeastern United States sinceembarking on a solo career in 1994, establishing himself as a keyboard virtuoso, composerand internationally acclaimed educator. A high-energy performer in genres including straightaheadjazz, chamber music and symphonic works, he has been recognizedby Downbeat magazine, The American Composers Forum, National Endowment for the Artsand the Great American Jazz Piano Competition — and was recently inducted into theAlabama Jazz Hall of Fame in acknowledgement of his artistic and educationalachievements.During his career, Motley has established a professional association with many of today’sleaders in jazz. Featured on public radio’s Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland, he has sharedthe stage with artists from Dave Brubeck and Regina Carter to Mel Tormé and Bob Mintzer.His composing portfolio encompasses a wide array of genres and ensembles, and he haspremiered works at numerous national and international festivals. In addition to his work asan artist, Motley is committed to jazz education, serving as professor of pedagogy andfounding director of Jazz Studies at Emory University.About the Schwartz Artist-in-Residence ProgramMade possible by the Donna and Marvin Schwartz Foundation, the Schwartz Artist-in-Residence program at Emory seeks to increase substantially the depth, diversity, and profileof performing arts education in the Emory and greater-Atlanta communities by providingopportunities for meaningful contact with performing artists, composers and art scholars fromthroughout the world.All events are presented in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts (1700 N.
