Chaparelle
CRITIC’S PICK:
Wed., Nov. 5
Chaparelle, Ramsey Thornton, Terminal West—In just a few years and one album, Texas duo Chaparelle fronted by Zella Day and Jesse Woods, have developed into the up-and-coming darlings of traditional honky-tonk. They already played the Austin City Limits festival and opened for Charlie Crockett. It’s old school country twang with male/female vocals reminiscent of George Jones and Tammy Wynette but with a slightly more contemporary singer/songwriter slant that moves into jazz/blues territory on their new album’s wonderful ballad “Sex & Rage.” This cool and slightly off-kilter twang is what might have been if Gram Parsons and Emmylou had a longer time together. The opener’s sweet folk-pop goes down smooth and easy. — Hal Horowitz
