Kickin’ Up Dust: A Vinyl-Only Showcase with DJ Kemit & Rich Medina for Record Store Day
ATLANTA, GA – On Saturday, April 12, Kickin’ Up Dust returns to Echo Room with a record collector’s dream lineup in celebration of Record Store Day. This month, DJ Kemit welcomes world-renowned DJ and producer Rich Medina for a set of rare, all-vinyl 45s, side by side. Two of the most respected deejays in the world, sharing the decks for a night of deep cuts, undeniable grooves, and pure turntable mastery—no laptops, no gimmicks, just skill and soul.“Kickin Up Dust is a night for the heads, the dancers, and the music lovers,” says Aishah Rashied Hyman, event series producer. “We designed Echo Room for this experience—an intimate, sonically rich space where vinyl reigns supreme. The energy, the music, the culture—it all comes alive here.”Kickin’ Up Dust, DJ Kemit’s monthly all-vinyl 45s party, has become a staple in Atlanta’s music scene, bringing together collectors, DJs, and dancers for an immersive experience in analog sound. From rare grooves to acid jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop B-sides, this event is a masterclass in curation.
“Vinyl 45s force you to be intentional,” says DJ Kemit, creator of Kickin’ Up Dust. “You’ve got two to four minutes to make an impact before it’s time to switch records. That keeps you sharp, keeps you creative. And when you have someone like Rich Medina beside you, the bar is set even higher.”
A platinum-selling producer, poet, and Ivy League lecturer, Rich Medina is known for his legendary parties, Jump N Funk and Lil’ Ricky’s Rib Shack, as well as his work with artists like Jill Scott and J Dilla. With over 40,000 records in his personal collection and four decades behind the decks, he brings an unparalleled depth of knowledge and passion to every set.
“Atlanta has some of the most soulful, musically educated crowds I’ve ever played for,” says Rich Medina.
“Spinning alongside Kemit at Kickin’ Up Dust? That’s what I call a perfect night. Aishah and Kemit have built something special here, and I’m honored to be part of it. For two decades, Rich Medina, DJ Kemit, and Aishah Rashied Hyman have been pushing creative boundaries together, crafting groundbreaking music and art installations that blend sound, storytelling, and immersive design.Medina says “My relationship with DJ Kemit and his lovely wife, Aishah, and the city of Atlanta would take an entire lifetime to explain fully. The things we’ve done together – from ===Spread Love’s Felabration===, to ===Funk Jazz Kafe===, to Revival, to ===Jump N Funk===, to Kickin Up Dust – have culminated in a personal relationship, and a relationship with Atlanta that is virtually impossible to describe in such a short space. Our shared history is enormous for me, and we are far from finished. I believe the city will feel that sonically on April 12th. My bags are already packed!”
In addition to back-to-back vinyl sets, the Record Store Day edition of Kickin Up Dust will feature a Vinyl pop-up shop – Dig through crates of must-have records; Vendors – A curated selection of local artisans and makers bringing one-of-a-kind handcrafted goods; Exclusive DJ Kemit releases for sale – Get your hands on original pressings from the man himself.

About Echo Room:
Nestled in the Westside Motor Lounge campus, Echo Room is Atlanta’s premier vinyl listening bar, known for its warm, intimate acoustics, top-tier sound system, and deep reverence for music culture. A haven for deejays and audiophiles alike, it’s where records tell stories, DJs shape experiences, and the dance floor never stops moving.
Listening bars, or Jazz Kissa, first emerged in Japan during the 1950s, offering a sanctuary for audiophiles to immerse themselves in the art of deep listening. These intimate venues were defined by their focus on high-quality sound systems, carefully curated record collections, and an atmosphere that encouraged the mindful appreciation of rare and eclectic vinyl. At the heart of Jazz Kissa was a reverence for music, creating a space where conversation softened, and the richness of analog sound became the true centerpiece. “The jazz kissa idea represents a very unique relationship between Japan and the US – a moment in history when African-Americans are coming on tour to Japan and being treated like gods, and going home to sleep in segregated hotels and ride different buses.” – Rob Garratt
Conceived by Salah Ananse, Mike Zarin, Kai Alce, DJ Kemit, Kelly Campbell, and Aishah Rashied Hyman, Echo Room draws inspiration from this tradition, bringing the magic of Jazz Kissa to Atlanta, where vinyl enthusiasts can connect over timeless grooves. The venue’s sound system is comprised of vintage studio and top-tier audio equipment from the collections of hi-fi enthusiasts all over the Atlanta Metropolitan area.
