Built To Spill & Yo La Tengo

CRITIC’S PICK:
Thurs., June 10
Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, The Eastern — These double headliner bills, where bands alternately swap the top spot, are a substantial bang for the buck. This combination is a particularly impressive blend of indie rockers likely appreciated by fans of either act. Both are journeyman outfits with decades of releases and touring behind them. Boise, Idaho’s Built to Spill (started in 1983) and New Jersey’s Yo La Tengo (formed a year later) have worked and expanded the indie rock boundaries over the decades they have been active;BTS by infusing blues into their grunge and YLT’s with its balance of noisy guitars and mellow melodies. This should be a night of superb music played by musicians unafraid to experiment with sonic variances inside their jagged boundaries. And if they join for a few tunes, the possibilities are especially enticing. — Hal Horowitz
