Emory Javanese Gamelan Ensemble presents Shadow Puppetry Theater

CRITIC’S PICK
Sat., Apr. 19
Atlanta is blessed with musical aggregations of every type, form and genre, none more wondrously entertaining than the Emory Javanese Gamelan Ensemble led by world-renowned puppeteer and maestro Darsono Hadiraharjo.
Two productions of Javanese ‘wayang kulit’ shadow puppetry are scheduled for Sat., Apr. 19, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, each one telling a different story from the Ramayana, one of world literature’s greatest epic scripts. Under Darsono’s expert direction, beautifully crafted puppets representing characters in the stories will be accompanied by the Emory Gamelan Ensemble.
If you have never experienced gamelan music – an entrancing combination of metallophones, gongs, bamboo tubes, skin drums, flutes and miscellaneous percussion — in person, this is an excellent opportunity to check that box on the list. – Doug DeLoach
