Neko Case, Des Demonas, Variety Playhouse — Indie singer/songwriter Case has shifted so far from her early ‘00s insurgent country roots, that few current fans even remember her early Bloodshot label discs. She now composes complex, beautifully conceived albums that spiral through a sort of dreamy, visceral, soundscape where winding songs often change direction before ending somewhere other than where they began. That’s the approach the honey-voiced Case takes on the new Neon Grey Midnight Green which she will be featuring tonight. It’s her first release of original material since 2018 and a strong contender for one of the most inventive, challenging and, at times, experimental Americana-inflected albums of the year. — Hal Horowitz
