Atlanta Ballet presents - Balanchine & Peck

Fri., Sep. 12 - Sun., 14
CRITIC’S PICK:
Balanchine & Peck, Atlanta Ballet — The esteemed dance company’s new season kicks off with a triple bill of popular pieces choreographed by the “father of American ballet,” George Balanchine, and New York City Ballet’s resident maestro, Justin Peck. The latter’s ‘In Creases’ is said to be an abstract presentation “that manipulates dancers’ bodies to form geometric shapes and complex structures” accompanied by the spectral sounds of Phillip Glass. Scored by Gabriel Fauré, Balanchine’s ‘Emeralds’ was originally part of a triptych titled ‘Jewels’ and is presented here as a “mini-ballet” of its own. His inspiration was a close friendship with the eminent jeweler Claude Arpels. The headline piece is Balanchine’s well-known ‘Prodigal Son’ with music by Sergei Prokofiev; it’s a torrid tale of sin and redemption which first premiered in 1929 in Russia. — Kevin C. Madigan
