Yellow Days
CRITIC'S PICK:
Sat., March 14
Yellow Days, Aisle 5 - This idiosyncratic UK neo soulman (known to his mom as the far less colorful George van den Broek) has been releasing music for a decade. But he's received attention lately with darker, quirkier material which borrows from R&B while incorporating a stripped-down gloomy angle that's cool but leaves you feeling uneasy. Comparisons to Sly's There's a Riot Going On album and some of Prince's rawer creations are in order, but this guy's talent, sound and style is hard to pin down. There's some funk and smoother moments yet an edge of despondency creeps into even his most upbeat moments. His songs are also connected with Donald Glover's "Atlanta" TV show, so that will likely attract some fans. Well worth a look if you're open to something different. - Hal Horowitz
