Lynyrd Skynyrd has a long history with the City of Atlanta. The band got its start in Jacksonville, FL but was early in the Atlanta rock scene. Atlanta’s connection with Lynyrd Skynyrd cemented this when Ronnie Vant Zant, the band’s lead singer in the famous line “”What song is it you wanna hear Atlanta?” at the Fox Theatre in July, 1976.
They were a fixture on the Atlanta club circuit back then - playing Funochios and Richards in the early 1970s. When the band first arrived in Atlanta, they stayed at the Clermont on Ponce until the bands fortunes improved.
A CL Vibes article in the July 5, 1975 edition previews the show as well as the upcoming concerts from The Rolling Stones, Ten Years After, Black Sabbath, James Brown, the Average White Band.
