Last year, after fleeing war-torn Syria, Ruwaida, Khaled and their two young children came to Atlanta through local refugee resettlement nonprofit New American Pathways. As they struggled to acclimate to their new surroundings, they found community in a new neighbor, Amanda Avutu, who wrote a Modern Love essay for the New York Times about the tight bond that eventually developed between them. Over the past months, that bond has led to SWEET, SWEET SYRIA, a supper club and bakery. Already a skilled chef in her home country, Ruwaida now hosts pop-up dinners and sells traditional Syrian cookies based on her mother’s recipe. The company is working on setting up an e-commerce system on their website, but cookies are currently available by preordered pick-up at Decatur’s Kavarna on a weekly basis. Stay tuned to the Sweet, Sweet Syria website and Facebook page for updates and future pop-ups. www.sweetsweetsyria.com. less...

It started as a mysterious painted wall with a colorful logo for the King of Pops, and then it turned into a popsicle empire built on flavorful frozen treats made with seasonal ingredients sold by smiling skater/surfer girls and boys. The King of Pops made fresh fruit popsicles hip again. Kids and adults line up for pops at farmers markets, weddings, festivals, or at the King's original location at the corner of North and North Highland avenues. Whether the puckery and spicy pineapple habanero or the now legendary chocolate sea salt is your favorite, the King of Pops has in fact become the king of pops as far as Atlanta frozen treats are concerned. less...

Gary Scarborough is the self-taught pastry whiz and 20-year kitchen vet in charge of all things sweet and delicious at Local Three Kitchen & Bar - including the bet-you-can't-eat-just-one-bite "Twix" Bar: A French butter cookie layered with homemade salted caramel and coated in thin white chocolate. Scarborough's swanky riff is a formidable rival to the original Twix. And at $3.53 per homemade bar, there's no shame in taking one or three home with you for later.

Pastry chef Pamela Moxley has emerged as a beacon of light in the dark morass of mediocre chocolate lava cakes and soggy pies. Moxley, who worked pastry from the opening to the closing of Craft and Craftbar, is in charge of all things sweet at Miller Union. Everything the disarmingly passionate chef makes is seasonally driven, unpretentious and expertly executed. Fat, juicy blueberries dribble over an upside-down-style buttery cake encrusted with crumbly brown sugar walnuts and oat-laced streusel topping. Highlights from the summer fruit season included a tart filled with sticky fig jam, and sliced figs tossed in wine reduction with homemade Earl Grey ice cream. These desserts showcase Moxley's moxy in their quiet beauty and precise simplicity. 999 Brady Ave. 678-733-8550. millerunion.com. less...

Is it just us, or is everything cuter in Decatur? In the fall of 2008, the Brothers Greene (that would be Tommy and Phil Greene of Augusta) dreamed of opening a candy shop to supply Atlanta with the tastiest pecans and fudge. Lo and behold, GREENE'S FINE FOODS has been pumping out deliciousness ever since. The stand-alone marble building in downtown Decatur houses an insanely quaint shop specializing in homemade chocolate pecan clusters, chocolate-covered potato chips, and chocolate-raspberry swirl fudge. Greene's also sells fresh Georgia pecans, harvested in the fall, as well as board games and aromatic candles. Kids will love the sweet treats, and parents will love relaxing on the couches by the fireplace ... with some sweet treats of their own. 141 E. When former insurance company analyst Steven Carse, better known on the streets as the KING OF POPS, first showed up on the corner of North and North Highland avenues, foodies instantly regressed. The popsicle peddler inspired childish sweet summertime lust with a variety of homemade exotic flavors, including grapefruit mint, chocolate sea salt, tangerine basil and more. The King has officially made Atlanta's summer that much cooler. www.kingofpops.net less...
