Theatrical Outfit programs new musical, bumps ‘Caroline’

Theatrical Outfit postpones the Tony Kushner musical for a world premiere by local artists Patdro Harris and S. Renee Clark.

Given Caroline, or Change, Theatrical Outfit has apparently chosen “Change” by postponing its planned Spring production of the Tony Kushner Civil Rights-era musical to the 2011-2012 season. Instead, artistic director Tom Key explains that the company will debut a new world premiere musical this spring:

We have an extraordinary opportunity to present a ground-breaking World Premiere Musical from the dynamic local talent of Patdro Harris (Blues In The Night, Black Nativity) and S. Renee Clark (Big River, Mahalia). This new production will be a celebration of African-American music, words, and dance. Throughout time, people of color have always had a song in their heart—some happy, some sad—but all laced with a spirit of hope that has helped to shape a country. Harris and Clark set out to show how this music has inspired, encouraged, and ignited a nation.

We will be moving our production of Caroline, or Change to our 2011-2012 season and presenting the World Premiere Musical in its stead during the same original performance dates, March 16 - April 10, 2011.

Theatrical Outfit has not yet announced the name of the new, vaguely-described show, but the creative team makes it sound intriguing.
