Floating Features, the latest offering from Los Angeles quartet La Luz, finds the psych outfit taking risks and embracing new sounds to exhilarating ends. Having honed their subtly rollicking brand of surf rock over the course of two previous LPs (2013’s It’s Alive and 2015’s Weirdo Shrine), La Luz has come barreling straight out of the gate for their 2018 release. The band’s growing confidence is immediately apparent on the album’s opener, a title track rife with bravado and Morricone Western-style swagger. “California Finally,” Floating Features’ second single, marries guitarist Shana Cleveland’s considered yet meandering riffs with a slightly menacing atmospheric haze. The track showcases the band’s trademark ability to balance playfulness and drama, generating pockets of light in a dark landscape.
With Timothy Eerie and Midnight Larks. $15. 8:30 p.m. Wed., June 13. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. www.badearl.com.
