The Atlanta City Council now has the first Muslim nonbinary member elected to office in Georgia. Liliana Bakhtiari won a runoff election to represent District 5, beating Mandy Mahoney by a margin of 68.4 percent to 31.6 percent. Bakhtiari, who sits on the board of the LGBTQ+ group Georgia Equality, is a curator of the Atlanta-based art group Black Futures Matter and has been an activist for refugees, sex trafficking victims, and orphans.
