The effort to turn Buckhead into a city suffered a setback on Thursday as Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan assigned related legislation sponsored by Republican Senator Brandon Beach to a Senate committee under the control of Democrats. The move didn’t kill outright the possibility of cityhood for the predominantly white neighborhood because a referendum provision could still be attached to other legislation, but it was welcome news for opponents of the plan. Mayor Andre Jenkins approved Duncan’s choice, as did Democratic state Rep. Shea Roberts, who said, “I’m hopeful his decision signals an end to this divisive legislation so we can focus on working with Mayor Dickens to address crime and services issues.” ajc.com
