A new U.S. government service that will help guide the response to future pandemics was launched Tuesday by the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with initial funding of $200 million from the coronavirus relief package of 2021. The Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics is housed at the CDC and is working with academic institutions to develop methods for modeling and forecasting.

Predicting the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. has been hampered by data-collection issues, says Caitlin Rivers, the CFOA’s associate director, adding that better access to data from state governments and hospitals is vital. pbs.org
