CRITIC’S PICK - There is traditional Qawwali, a centuries-old form of Sufi devotional singing most recently popularized by the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and others. Then there is a modernized, adapted-for-Western-ears, type of Qawwali, as purveyed by Ustad Rahat Fatah Ali Khan who will be performing at The Coca-Cola Roxy on Sat., Sep. 28. While the two types of singing are related by tradition and heredity, the latter doesn’t convey the same mysterious energy and spiritual zeal of the former. But that won’t matter to anyone attending the concert by the nephew of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, son of Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan and grandson of Qawwali singer Fateh Ali Khan. Khan’s program of traditionally derived compositions, romantic odes (ghazals) and selections from film soundtracks will undoubtedly enthrall and entertain. – Doug DeLoach
