CRITIC’S PICK: Allen Stone, Tabernacle—Blue-eyed soulman Stone, self-described as “hippie with soul,” has been working his funky R&B for the better part of 15 years. His suave voice and melodic tunes combine for a luxurious sound reminiscent of 70s singers like Marvin Gaye, Boz Scaggs and more current artists such as Hozier and Bruno Mars. A recent album found him unplugged for a superb acoustic set that focused on his beautifully emotive vocals. But a newer single from 2023, “Magic,” upped the smooth funk, which is where he shines.— Hal Horowitz
