CRITIC’S PICK: Bob Margolin, Bill Sheffield’s House—The ex-Muddy Waters guitarist has a lengthy solo career carrying on the spirit of his old boss’s Chicago blues. He appears tonight at Bill Sheffield’s home, backed by Sheffield, Blue Velvet Atlanta drummer Sandra Senn, and Paul Linden (harmonica, ex-Sean Costello). It’ll be a low-key, intimate and authentic evening of pure electric blues featuring some of Margolin’s originals with organic playing by masters of the form. — Hal Horowitz

From the venue:

These three legendary players only played together once before last year, and here is your second chance to see them all together.

Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin is a Blues guitar player and singer who tours worldwide with his band, solo, or as a featured guest. He delivers original songs and the spirit of Chicago Blues that he learned onstage and recording in Muddy Waters’ band from 1973-1980. You can see him with Muddy and The Band in the Last Waltz film from 1976 all the way to live in the all-star Last Waltz shows by Blackbird Presents. Bob is known for his slide guitar, powerful vocals and the sound, stories and time travel of his experiences and with the legends he knew.

Everything about Bill Sheffield is authentic. It’s there in the intense, transcendent way he finger picks his guitar with hints of John Hurt and Blind Blake flashing through. It’s there in his songs that wrestle with earthly pleasure and the need for redemption. And it most definitely is there in Got A Gig, Gotta Go, his 9th studio recording on American Roots Records. Journal On A Shelf, Sheffield’s release and Got A Gig, Gotta Go distill a lifetime pursuit of authentic American roots music that announce the arrival of one of the most significant roots musicians to emerge in the past decade.

Paul Linden has toured North America and Western Europe primarily as sidemen for blues and roots-Americana artists including Sean Costello and Susan Tedeschi. He has performed on Austin City Limits, CBS, NPR, and Mike King’s documentary on Chicago Blues Festivals and Venues include Montreal Jazz Festival, Memphis in May blues festival, Atlanta’s Fox Theater, New York’s Beacon theater, Portland’s Roseland Theater, and the Filmore West. Additional performance credits are with Bo Diddley, John Primer, Kim Wilson, Hubert Sumlin, Jerry McCain, and Nick Moss.

Sandra Senn has been playing percussion and drums for 17 years, and for this show she brings her unique percussion setup to back these three legendary players.
