Guster, The Mountain Goats, Synovus Bank Amphitheater at Chastain Park: Few would have put money on Boston’s lush folk/poppers Guster to headline larger venues like this back in 2006 when “Satellite” was dominating the radio. But here they are, nearly two decades and a passel of classy, pleasant, well-produced if far from edgy albums later; older, wiser and with a cult audience large enough to fill this classic outdoor amphitheater. Opening act The Mountain Goats’ ongoing popularity is even more unlikely. John Darnielle’s leadership has shifted from stark, almost experimental folk toward a more commercial, even pop-oriented indie rock over the decades (their debut was in 1994), making this improbable double bill even more attractive. — Hal Horowitz

From the venue:

In their early years, veteran Boston alternative rockers Guster brought a scrappy, back-porch DIY feel to their shows by performing in a stripped-down setting with hand percussion, playing bass lines on a regular guitar. When they toured in support of albums like 1995's ‘Parachute' and 1997's ‘Goldfly,' this approach proved infectious, earning them as much of a following as their early singles like "Airport Song" and "Demons" had attracted. By the time they released the ‘Lost and Gone Forever' album in 1999, though, Guster had expanded their sound both stylistically and in terms of their instrumental arsenal.
