CRITIC’S PICK:
Bright Star by Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Strand Marietta — Spanning the years 1923 to 1945, and set in North Carolina to a bluegrass score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, ‘Bright Star’ tells the story of Alice Murphy, a sad sack literary editor, and Billy Cane, a soldier venturing home in the wake of World War II. The musical is inspired by an old newspaper article discovered by Brickell about a baby thrown from a train in a suitcase.
Brickell — Paul Simon’s third wife — and banjo whiz Martin have been collaborating on projects since 2013, first with the album ‘Love Has Come For You’ followed by a tour that year with the Steep Canyon Rangers; ‘Bright Star’ opened on Broadway at the Cort Theatre in 2016. Shortly thereafter, the pair appeared in the documentary film ‘The American Epic Sessions’ and on its accompanying soundtrack. — Kevin C. Madigan
