Honoring May Day: A Teach-In on Atlanta Labor History

This is an in-person only event, which takes place at Charis Books and More. It is free to attend and no registration is required. Please read the in-person event guidelines at the bottom of this page to be sure you can participate in the event.
Join Charis and the Living Wage Campaign at Agnes Scott College for “Honoring May Day: A Teach-In on Atlanta Labor History,” a space for community, reflection, and celebration on May 1st in honor of International Workers’ Day. We will be hearing from Paul McLennan, a labor and community organizer, about his experience organizing in the South for more than 45 years and following the talk with a screening of the documentary "Domestic Workers Make History." This gathering centers and uplifts domestic laborers in the Atlanta community, recognizing the essential, often unseen work they do to sustain households, families, and our broader communities.
Through this event, we aim to not only celebrate their contributions, but also create space for connection, storytelling, and dialogue. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversations about labor practices, workers’ rights, and the social and economic realities shaping domestic work locally and beyond. By coming together in community, we hope to foster greater awareness, solidarity, and appreciation for the labor that too often goes unrecognized, while imagining more just and equitable futures for all workers.
What to Expect:

He is a retired member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732 where he served as shop steward, newsletter editor, executive board member, and delegate to the Atlanta Labor Council. In addition to the labor movement, he has been active in the anti-war, anti-apartheid, immigrant rights, and disability rights struggles. Currently, he works part-time at the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, co-chairs the Decolonize Decatur Committee of the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights, co-hosts the WRFG Labor Forum, and is a member of the Atlanta chapter of the Southern Workers Assembly and the Atlanta Multifaith Coalition for Palestine. A major influence is Ella Baker and the radically democratic work of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Black Freedom Movement of the 1960s. As a trauma and abuse survivor and grandfather to 3 grandsons, he centers the importance of healing ourselves, transforming the world, and passing the struggle on!
About the Living Wage Campaign:The Living Wage Campaign at Agnes Scott College is a student organization that has been around since the 1990s, and advocates for the development of positive relationships between the student body and the domestic laborers that serve the campus community. Its purpose is to uplift the concept of a democratic workplace, fair pay for all, and institutional respect for everyone who works at Agnes Scott College.
The event is free and open to all people, especially to those who have no income or low income, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle, our programming non-profit.
