Talk of the Town
Jeff Slate at State Farm Arena — Trae Young is held back, once again, from probably being ejected as the 8th place Hawks fall to the 7th place Orlando Magic at State Farm Arena Thursday night, 114-108.
It was not the NBA at its finest. The play was sloppy throughout the game but if the teams did not play particularly well coming off the All-Star game break, the refs had a worse night. Not to play homer, but by any objective standard at least a few of the four fouls called against Trae, all in the fourth quarter, were absurd. Trae has a well deserved reputation as a complainer but this year he is “only” tied for 4th in technical fouls with 10. He would have easily received his 11th and been ejected if not for his teammates restraining him several times.
The Magic went to the foul line 38 times, a season-high tie against Atlanta, and converted 28 of them. Conversely, Atlanta was 19 of 28 from the charity stripe.
With the loss the Hawks fall one and a half games behind Orlando. The loss cannot be entirely blamed on the refs. Atlanta shot a measly 39.4% from the field and squandered an early 19-point lead. In addition to Young, George’s Niang and Terrance Mann, making their home debuts, also received technicals. But that fourth quarter, when the Hawks were making a run, was thwarted each time by the 10 fouls called against them in the quarter. Despite the fouls, Trae finished the evening with a game-high 38 points but with 5 turnovers and only 5 assists. The Magic’s Paolo Banchero scored a team-high 36 points.
Next game for the Hawks: Detroit at State Farm Sunday 6 pm. No idea when this crew of refs perform again. They were certainly unforgettable.
