The role of the elf warrior Legolas Greenleaf, which Orlando Bloom played in the epic film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, is the one for which he is best known. Critics acknowledged his talent as an actor, but the fact that Bloom was able to win over such a large number of followers over the course of three films was the most noteworthy development.
In spite of the fact that his naturally dark features were concealed by a waist-length blonde wig, blue contact lenses, and pointy ears, young women all over the world discovered a new heartthrob. Bloom’s success in the role of Legolas opened doors for the classically trained English actor, who has since gone on to appear in a number of other films that have received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to this, Entertainment Weekly included him on their “It list” in the year 2003 because he had become one of the most desirable young actors in Hollywood.
The 13th of January, 1977 found young Orlando Bloom being born in Canterbury, England. His mother, Sonia, was the proprietor of a school for learning foreign languages, and his father, Harry, was an advocate for human rights, attorney, and author. Prior to relocating to Canterbury, the elder Bloom family members lived in South Africa, where the family patriarch, Harry Bloom (1913–1981), was a ferocious opponent of the policy of racial segregation known as apartheid.
Harry Bloom passed away in 1981. His father had suffered a stroke not long before Orlando turned four years old when he passed away. Their mother, who had a significant impact on their lives, was responsible for the upbringing of both him and his older sister, Samantha.
Sonia Bloom had a successful career in business, but in addition to that, she was an avid supporter of the arts. She went so far as to name her child after Orlando Gibbons, the English composer who was her absolute favourite (1583–1625). Sonia took both Orlando and Samantha on numerous trips to the theatre while they were growing up.
She also encouraged both of them to participate in drama classes as well as Bible reading classes. By the time Bloom was eight years old, he was already participating in school plays and competing alongside his sister in community competitions. Bloom related the following to Siobhan Synnot, who worked on the website for the Scotsman: “You had to read out stories or poetry, and we always won.
Bloom’s early experiences in the theatre solidified his conviction that he should pursue a career in the performing arts. Bloom’s acting career provided him with a number of benefits, not the least of which was the fact that it assisted him in overcoming challenges he faced in his early childhood. To begin, he described himself to Synnot as having been “quite a chubby kid” when he was younger. When Bloom was nine years old, he sustained an injury while skiing.
While he was recovering from his injury, he moped around the house and ate candy bars. This contributed to Bloom’s current level of chubbiness. When he was diagnosed with severe dyslexia, which means that he has trouble reading and processing language, a more serious problem arose. This means that he has trouble reading. When he was a student at St. Edmund’s School in Canterbury, he was frequently made fun of because of his spelling errors.
Bloom believes that he has a terrible propensity for getting into accidents. He has suffered multiple fractures, including those to both of his legs (due to skiing accidents), his nose (due to a rugby injury), one of his wrists (due to snowboarding), and one of his toes (crushed by a horse). Even more severe injuries include multiple fractures to his skull. For instance, when Bloom was just a toddler, he managed to knock over a stool in the kitchen.
While Bloom and the other nine actors who comprised the “fellowship of the ring” were filming The Lord of the Rings films in New Zealand, they became so close with one another that they decided to get tattoos to commemorate their bond. Bloom has a tattoo on his right forearm that looks like the elf symbol for the number nine.
The sculpting skills of Bloom are very high. He attended classes related to sculpture while he was in school, and he has aspirations of opening his own sculpting studio someday. In an interview with Catriona Hawatson of the Sunday Times (UK), Bloom provided the following explanation: “It is essential to train your brain in a variety of creative modalities on a regular basis. It helps you find a balance.
Bloom hangs a collection of charms and other small trinkets around his neck. Some of them are presents, like the key ring that Johnny Depp gave to him; others are things that Bloom has found on his travels, like a prayer baton from India, a shell from Thailand, and a silver ball from Tokyo, Japan.
When Bloom was sixteen years old, he uprooted his life and moved to London to become a member of the National Youth Theatre. Following the completion of the first two seasons, he was awarded a scholarship to continue his education at the British American Drama Academy.
During his time there, he tried out for roles in both the theatre and on television. After that, Bloom attended the esteemed Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London for a period of three years. This illustrious institution is located in the city of London and served as the educational foundation for a number of newly famous English actors, including Ewan McGregor (circa 1971–), Joseph Fiennes (1970–), and Ben Chaplin (c. 1969–). Bloom made his debut in the film industry the same year, 1998, with a brief, one-line role in the film Wilde, which was about the English playwright Oscar Wilde (1854–1900).
