Atlanta Councilman Amir Farokhi introduced legislation Monday that would temporarily close parts of Peachtree Street to car traffic on one Sunday per month. The 2.5 mile closure would stretch between Mitchell and 14th streets and would allow only bicyclists and walkers during the hours of 2 to 6 p.m. If approved, the scheme would begin next January.

The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and other transportation advocates are behind the move but opposition from residents and business owners is expected, likely the same ones who managed to scuttle the recent “Shared Peachtree” pilot program. ajc.com
