Yep, it's Earth Day, the one day out of the year we're asked to act like we should all the time. Some activities to consider:

>> Georgia Tech hosts its 14th annual Earth Day Celebration today until 10 p.m. Stop by and you'll find "exhibitors, eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, a clothing swap, an office supply exchange, live music, and organic popcorn." The event's expected to draw nearly 3,000 people — and even include an appearance by Captain Planet, Ziggy Stardust's cousin. According to the website, the captain will face off against "Bag Monster" at noon.
>> Tomorrow you'll want to stop by Turner Field for Atlanta City Councilwoman Carla Smith's annual e-recycling day. The eco-minded politico is big on helping folks get rid of old TVs and VCRs, among other household electronic device, and will have trucks and crews waiting to haul off your junk. This year Smith is adding unused paint to the list of items she'll be accepting at the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More details here.
>> Park Pride, one of Atlanta's biggest greenspace champions, is holding clean-ups in Kirkwood and Woodruff Park today and tomorrow. More details here.

The Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club has a good list of activities, including Woodstock's inaugural Earth Day celebration and a hiking trip in North Georgia, on its event page along the right hand menu. Trees Atlanta is hosting a bicycle tour that starts at its Reynoldstown headquarters to learn about, well, trees. If you're a nonprofit and are hosting an eco-event we've missed, feel free to leave it in the comments. (Marketers and PR types be warned: We'll delete your comment if you're trying to hawk some wannabe green product.)

If you can't attend any of the above, don't fret. Consider ditching your car for transit at least a few days out of the week, get rid of your wasteful light bulbs, install water-saving fixtures, or sign up to help clean up the Beltline."

That, more or less, is the meaning of Earth Day. (Here's a good history on the day and its founder, Gaylord Nelson, courtesy of the Writer's Almanac.)

Events marking the day's 40th anniversary have been happening all week. Here's a list of what's planned today. (Worth noting: Pledge to WABE today and Trees Atlanta will plant one of those leafy gremlins along the Beltline in your honor.)

Be sure to check our Events page for more activities planned for this weekend. On Saturday, Atlanta City Councilwoman Carla Smith will hold her annual Electronic Waste Recycling Day at Turner Field. Bring your old, unwanted electronics to the Blue Lot from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and send them off to a environmentally safe afterlife. (There's a $10 fee for TVs, which is a bargain when you compare it to most e-recycling programs.)

A cool event you won't want to miss: The 3rd annual Beltline Bike Tour on Sunday. Three different routes are offered, ranging from a short ride to a full trek around the proposed 22-mile loop parks, trails and transit. Riders will leave Grady High School at 1 p.m. All routes loop back to that point.

If you've got an event in mind, leave the details in the comments.

After the jump, an animated piece that the Mother Nature Network's Russell McLendon assembled. It reviews Earth Day's 40-year history — and the progress and setbacks the environment's faced — in less than five minutes. (He's also a former CL staffer who we dearly miss.)"
