In most cities situated more than 5,000 miles from Seoul, it’s hard enough to find a silky, sizzling bowl of tofu soup at a normal hour of the day - let alone at 5 a.m. Doraville is the exception. Tucked just inside the Perimeter on Buford Highway, 88 TOFU HOUSE serves tofu nearly 88 ways, predominantly in soups rounded out with meat, vegetables, seafood or bean paste. Even better, the restaurant stays open around the clock, meaning that you can order up the ultimate hangover cure — at a spice level that will knock the misery out of you - before your hangover even sets in. Even in the wee hours, the slightly tattered and friendly space can be packed with Korean diners, but servers do their best to make customers of all ethnicities welcome. The menu is printed in both English and Korean, and the waitstaff communicates well enough to let you know that the raw eggs on the table are to be cracked into the bubbling broth. less...

Its food menu offers both expected pub fare like brats, burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, and hearty, comforting dishes like pierogi primavera covered in seasonal veggies, and the volcano, a bread bowl bursting with Brunswick stew. You’ll need the sustenance to look over a beer selection so large that it’s housed in a binder. Forget about Buds or Millers — the downstairs bar stocks 17 international, regional and local drafts, plus more than 60 bottled varieties, including English ales, pale ales and German hefeweizens. There’s also a Belgian bar upstairs with eight rotating drafts and more than 100 options. One of the last true diners in the city, the Skillet serves big buttermilk biscuits available straight up or stuffed. BEST RESTAURANT TREND

Americans are finally learning to eat at a leisurely pace. Over recent years, more and more restaurants have been forgoing the three-course format for more free-form dining options like tapas and sushi. This year, we especially love how many restaurants are offering MEAT AND CHEESE PLATES as the start to a meal, or accompaniment to a bottle of wine (or three) for a group of friends. New restaurants such as Enoteca Carbonari and Krog Bar offer a wonderful selection. At the Fifth Group’s new restaurant, Ecco, the gorgonzola dolce and the spicy coppa are not to be missed.

There are many restaurants around the world that we wish we could visit more often. Most are located in far away places like Paris, California or New York. But one is in Birmingham, a mere two-and-a-half hours from Atlanta. Frank Stitt, chef and owner of THE HIGHLANDS BAR & GRILL, figured out more than 20 years ago that the cuisine of the American South has a lot in common with the cuisine of the south of France. His elegant restaurant blends the two cultures perfectly. Menu items like pork rillettes with pickled cherries and cole slaw make the trek across the state line well worth it. We’d drive a lot farther for food this good. less...

Once you’ve eaten at KOOL KORNERS on 14th Street, you’re in the club — you’re officially an Atlantan. But first you have to participate in the ritual: Wait patiently in line (which snakes out the front door at lunch hour), order a classic Cuban sandwich from the counter, and relish every last bite from either the hood of your car or the dilapidated picnic table out back. Roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, tomato and pickles pressed between slices of warm, crusty bread — there’s simply no better sandwich in town. less...

You can hit a tapas restaurant practically anywhere in town these days, but none are as true to the Spanish vision as KROG BAR in the parking lot of Stove Works, which Kevin Rathbun opened as an adjunct to his eponymous restaurant. What makes Krog Bar so authentic? For one thing, it’s tiny and there’s a heavy emphasis on wines, just as you’d find in Sevilla, where the most popular tapas bars are so packed they incur involuntary frottage. Also, Rathbun focuses on simple quality — the best Serrano ham, the best cheeses. We should mention that all items are cold and not all are Spanish. The place is too small for any kind of cooking. There are zillions of totally authentic taquerias all over Atlanta, thanks to our growing Mexican population. But we haven’t encountered anything quite like the taqueria inside this particular EL MOLINO, a chain of Mexican markets. It’s not just the enormous tortas (try the carnitas on weekends), savory tacos (try the al pastor) and perhaps the city’s best authentic posole (available weekends only). What keeps us coming back is Carlos the cook’s weekday preparations of two daily specials — home-style dishes like chicharrones en salsa verde — that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. The menu is printed in both English and Korean, and the waitstaff communicates well enough to let you know that the raw eggs on the table are to be cracked into the bubbling broth. less...

Mitchell Anderson, formerly Ross on the Fox’s “Party of Five,” opened METROFRESH after a stint at Souper Jenny’s in Buckhead. Here, as there, you’ll find hearty soups (try the Tuscan stew) and sandwiches, along with salads, pastas and a few more complicated entrees from time to time. A couple of specials are posted daily. You can eat in, but the food is ideal for carryout since it’s simple. There are plenty of vegetarian options. The close proximity to Piedmont Park makes it an ideal stop before a picnic. less...

La Casita is a great place for a cheap but fun date, or to spend a summer evening getting drunk on the patio with a group of friends. We especially love the enchiladas with red sauce ($5.85), the pork tacos ($2.35) and the $4 margaritas ($2.50 on Mondays). The kid’s beans and rice is hard to beat for $1.75. The staff is a reflection of the neighborhood — tattooed, friendly, and full of personality. less...

Atlanta was nothing but perked dishwater until AURORA COFFEE opened here in 1992. Its two shops, which are now owned by the same folks who operate Criminal Records, were never designed as cozy hangouts, but the baristas still receive the best training in town and the quality of the coffee drinks shows it. Order a single shot. Note its sparkling golden crema, its smooth and slightly piquant taste, its slightly oily texture. It’s a reason to go on living another day.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect latte, a great office away from the office with free Wi-Fi, a tasty lunch sandwich or a super-chill place to grab a beer after work, OCTANE will outdo your coffeehouse expectations. It’s rare for a place to be so hip and so comfortable. We love the industrial vibe, the cool but not too cool staff, the locally produced art on the walls, the pastries and cookies from Alon’s and, of course, well-crafted coffee drinks and high-quality teas.

LAS PALMERAS may also be the best value in Midtown. The tiny, ambiance-free restaurant — not surprisingly located in the neighborhood that was home to Atlanta’s invasion of Cuban refugees in the ‘70s — serves inexpensive, savory home-style cooking. Our favorites remain the masitas de puerco, the boliche and the fried chicken. The tamales are the best apps; the flan is flantastic. On a temperate evening, the patio is idyllic. less...

Could you be the one for me?” “SPS (single, pink syrup) looking for a pucker-worthy partner. I’m of Persian descent and am well-known for my fragrant flavor. Any takers?” There’s some serious matchmaking going on behind the bar at Eclipse di Sol, where the GRAPEFRUIT ROSEWATER MARTINI was consummated. The $7 cocktail is a delectable marriage of fresh-squeezed juice and essence of rose petals, shaken with vodka, garnished with mint, and served in a sugar-rimmed glass.
